Grand Western European Rail Journey: Lisbon to Rome

Independent 25-day rail journey across five countries, Lisbon to Rome

Illustration of Grand Western European Rail Journey: Lisbon to Rome

Railbookers operates this independent, 25-day rail vacation across five countries, from Lisbon to Rome, with Rail Expert support rather than a tour escort. After two nights in Lisbon, a 6-hour coach ride, the trip's one non-rail leg, reaches Seville, and standard-class trains then carry travelers on to Madrid, Barcelona and a three-night stay in Paris. From Paris, the route turns to Switzerland for the trip's signature stretch: a scenic train to Zermatt beneath the Matterhorn, a day trip on the Gornergrat cog railway, the Glacier Express to St. Moritz, and the UNESCO-listed Bernina Express on to Milan. Three-night stays in Venice and Rome bookend a single night in Florence before the trip closes. Sightseeing throughout includes the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, the Eiffel Tower summit and a Seine cruise in Paris, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and the Colosseum in Rome, suiting travelers who want one long rail itinerary with guided sightseeing built in, rather than booking several separate trips.

What to know before you look closer

  • The Lisbon to Seville leg on day 3 is a 6-hour coach ride, not a train; every other city-to-city leg on the itinerary is by rail.
  • Rail travel is in standard class throughout, and St. Moritz, Milan and Florence are each just a one-night stop before moving on.
  • Hotel options are listed without a stated total count and span many price tiers per city, for example the InterContinental Lisbon Bairro Alto alongside more modest chain hotels, so which property you get depends on the tier and city you pick.
  • The evidence gives no current departure dates; confirm availability and pricing with Railbookers before booking.
