Illustration of Western European Rail Journey Rome to Madrid

Railbookers operates this 20-day, 19-night self-guided rail journey from Rome to Madrid, crossing Italy, Switzerland, France, and Spain. The days move between two paces: multi-night city stays with included guided tours, such as the Colosseum in Rome, the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, and standout train days through the Alps, including the Bernina Express from Milan to St. Moritz and the Glacier Express to Zermatt, followed by the Gornergrat cog railway to 3,090 metres for views of the Matterhorn. From Zermatt, the route continues through Zurich to three nights in Paris, then on to Barcelona, Seville, and Madrid, each with a guided city tour included. Breakfast is included at all 19 hotel stays. The operator describes it as suited to first-time train travelers, and the mix of marquee scenic trains with a heavy roster of included sightseeing makes it a fit for travelers who want a long, guided introduction to European rail rather than a bare-bones point-to-point itinerary.
