Bergen Railway and Postal Shipping

Oslo to Trondheim via Bergen Railway, fjord ferry, and coastal cruise ship

Illustration of Bergen Railway and Postal Shipping

Railtour Suisse operates this 8-day independent journey from Oslo to Trondheim, blending two celebrated Norwegian railways with a coastal postal boat cruise. You travel unguided, staying in mid-range hotels and aboard ship as you explore Oslo's museums and parks, descend the steep-sided Flåm Railway through waterfalls into the fjords, cross the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord by ferry, spend two days aboard a Hurtigruten or Havila ship cruising the northern coast, and visit the historic city of Trondheim before a final train ride south. The pace is relaxed, with two nights in Bergen and time to discover each city on your own terms. Breakfast is included throughout; lunch and dinner are at your own expense. This package suits independent travellers who want the structure of a planned itinerary without daily group guidance, as well as couples and repeat rail travellers seeking a rare combination of mountain railways, fjord ferries, and a working postal route.

What to know before you look closer

  • Lunch and dinner are not included; the package covers breakfast and some meals only on the ship.
  • International flights to and from Oslo are not included; you must arrange your own arrival and departure transport.
  • The trip is unguided; some days (especially in Oslo, Bergen, and Trondheim) require independent exploration.
  • The from-price is in Swiss francs (CHF 1,880); currency conversion and availability depend on your booking date.

Day by day

  1. Day 1overnight: Oslo

    Arrival in Oslo

Use the time to explore the Norwegian capital Oslo with all its famous sights such as the Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Viking Ship Museum and the Munch Museum. The climb up to the new opera house right by the sea is just as worthwhile as the short trip up to Holmenkollen with its ski jumps. Depending on your flight schedule, we recommend an additional overnight stay in Oslo so that you can enjoy the special flair of this city on the fjord of the same name to the full.

  2. Day 2railovernight: Flåm

Oslo - Myrdal - Flåm (train)

Today you travel on the Bergen Railway from Oslo to Myrdal. Past charming villages and along deep blue lakes, the train steadily gains altitude until it finally reaches the Hardangervidda high plateau. You finally reach Myrdal through this archaic landscape. There you change to the spectacular Flåm Railway, which takes you through wild and beautiful landscapes with waterfalls and steep mountain slopes. Overnight stay in Flåm.

  3. Day 3railovernight: Bergen

Flåm - Gudvangen - Voss - Bergen (boat, bus, train)

Before you continue your tour, use the morning to discover Flåm and its surroundings on a hike, kayak or bike tour. In the afternoon, take the ferry across the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen. The journey continues by bus through the Nærøyfjord valley. In Voss you board the Bergen train again, which takes you on to Bergen. Overnight stay in Bergen.

  4. Day 4overnight: Bergen

    Bergen

Visit the charming city of Bergen: Bryggen Hanseatic area, the Fløibanen, the house of the composer Edvard Grieg Troldhaugen, the fish market, the Bergen Aquarium and the Bergen Open Air Museum.

  5. Day 5overnight: Onboard ship

Postal boat trip Bergen - Trondheim

Enjoy the magnificent world of the fjords, relax in the evening on deck or in the panorama lounge while the ship cruises slowly through the beautiful fjord and coastal landscape. You will spend two nights in your chosen cabin. Breakfast included.

  6. Day 6overnight: Onboard ship

    Nordfjord

It's worth getting up early. The magnificent view of the idyllic Nordfjord beckons. Later, the ship will be sailing on the high seas for the first time at Norway's westernmost point.

  7. Day 7overnight: Trondheim

    Trondheim

You reach Trondheim early in the morning. Your cruise ends here. But the magical city, which has retained its historical character, beckons. 1 overnight stay in a good mid-range hotel incl. breakfast.

  8. Day 8rail

    Train journey Trondheim - Oslo
