Eight-day Norwegian winter rail tour: Bergen, fjords, Oslo with two cruises

Great Rail Journeys operates this 8-day escorted winter journey through Norway, starting in London and ending in Oslo. The tour combines rail travel with two fjord cruises and hotel stays in Bergen, Flåm and Oslo. A UK Tour Manager leads the group throughout. Days begin with breakfast; guests ride the Flåm Railway, one of the world's steepest standard-gauge railways, descending past waterfalls and dramatic landscapes. In Bergen, a guided tour explores the historic Bryggen waterfront and colourful wooden buildings. A visit to the Viking Valley of Njardarheimr offers a glimpse of traditional Viking life and crafts. The tour includes funicular and gondola rides to mountain viewpoints, cruises on the Nærøyfjord and Oslofjord, and time to explore Oslo's museums and modern streets. This package suits escorted-tour travellers who value guidance, history and scenic rail journeys without the need to plan logistics.
Your Norwegian holiday begins at London Heathrow, where you meet the Tour Manager and rest of the group ahead of your flight to Bergen, via Oslo. On arrival, you are transferred by coach to your centrally located hotel in the heart of the fjords and framed by snow-dusted mountains. You might choose to relax at the hotel or take a stroll to familiarise yourself with the local surroundings. This evening, enjoy your first group dinner at the hotel.
Meals: Dinner
After a leisurely breakfast, head out on a guided sightseeing tour of Bergen, taking in sights such as the picturesque Bryggen waterfront with its colourful buildings and narrow alleyways, a reminder of the town's importance as part of the Hanseatic League's trading empire and once the largest 'wooden' city in Europe. After the tour, explore more of the city at your own pace, perhaps sampling fresh seafood at the fish market or visiting Bergen's Art Gallery (featuring works by Edvard Munch) or the Science Museum. Dine independently this evening.
Meals: Breakfast
This morning after breakfast, take a round trip on the Fløibanen funicular to Mount Fløyen. With free time at the top, discover why Bergen is called the 'capital of the fjords' and take in spectacular panoramic views over the city, fjords and mountains, or take a short walk along one of the scenic snow-blanketed trails. Enjoy a relaxing three-course lunch in the mountaintop restaurant, where traditional Norwegian flavours are paired with incredible views. The afternoon is yours to spend at leisure in Bergen.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
After checking out of the Bergen hotel, travel by rail to Voss. On arrival, take a short walk to the Voss Gondola boarding point for a scenic 2,500-foot ascent to the summit of Mount Hangur in just nine minutes, with sweeping views of snow-dusted forests, mountains and lakes. Pastries and a hot drink are served at the top. After returning on the Voss Gondola, travel by coach to Flåm, a village at the head of Aurlandsfjord. Arrive this afternoon with time to explore before dinner together at the hotel.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast, travel by coach to the nearby village of Gudvangen for a visit to the Viking Valley of Njardarheimr. Wander through the village, meet the working Vikings and gain a fascinating insight into daily life during the Viking Age. Then board a modern, environmentally friendly boat for a peaceful cruise back to Flåm through the Nærøyfjord, with serene views of still icy waters, snow-covered peaks and dramatic (sometimes frozen) waterfalls. The rest of the afternoon is free to spend at leisure before dinner together.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast, board the Flåm Railway, one of the world's steepest standard-gauge railways, for a journey to Myrdal. The scenic line travels through dramatic fjord landscapes and leafy canyons, making a stop to admire the mighty Kjosfossen waterfall (often frozen in winter). At Myrdal, change trains for a journey to Oslo, enjoying stunning views of Norway's rugged landscapes. Arrive in Oslo this afternoon and check in to the centrally located hotel. The rest of the day is free to explore the capital.
Meals: Breakfast
After breakfast, take a gentle walk to the pier for a two-hour cruise around Oslofjord, gliding through tranquil inlets dotted with forested islands with views of Oslo's iconic landmarks including the modern Opera House, the wooden Dyna Lighthouse and Hovedøya island (a 12th-century monastery site). The afternoon is yours to explore Oslo at leisure, visit the Munch Museum or the National Museum (home to 'The Scream'), stroll the trendy Grünerløkka area or stop by a cosy café. This evening, gather for the final group dinner at a local restaurant.
Meals: Breakfast, Dinner
After breakfast, transfer by rail to the airport for the flight back to the UK, landing at London Heathrow later today.
