Five-day Welsh rail heritage loop from Llandrindod Wells on three steam railways

Illustration of Valleys & Railways of Mid Wales

Great Rail Journeys' Valleys & Railways of Mid Wales is a 5-day escorted tour based in Llandrindod Wells, a Victorian spa town in the heart of Wales. The itinerary centres on three heritage railways: the Talyllyn Railway, which has carried passengers since 1865 through forests and waterfalls; the Vale of Rheidol Railway, a restored steam line climbing 12 miles from Devil's Bridge to the coast at Aberystwyth; and the Welshpool & Llanfair Light Railway, threading through woodland and hills. Between rail journeys, days include a ranger-led tour of the Elan Valley (a landscape of six dams and reservoirs in the Cambrian Mountains), a visit to the medieval Powis Castle and its Italianate gardens, a Welsh language lesson at Aberystwyth University, and leisure time in the coastal villages of Tywyn and Aberdovey. All travel, four nights in the Metropole Hotel and Spa, and breakfast and dinner are included. The tour suits repeat rail travellers, history enthusiasts, and couples seeking an escorted Welsh experience without the pace of changing hotels nightly.
