Heritage railways and gardens across central Wales from Shrewsbury to Swansea

PTG Tours operates this 8-day escorted tour through central Wales, traveling from Shrewsbury to Swansea and based for five nights in the small market town of Llandovery. The journey centres on the Heart of Wales Line, a scenic mainline railway that carries passengers through rolling countryside, over the Knucklas Viaduct, and through the Sugar Loaf tunnel. Beyond the mainline, the tour visits five heritage railways, each offering a different glimpse of Wales' railway past, from the Gwili Steam Railway near Carmarthen to the narrow-gauge Vale of Rheidol Railway climbing from Aberystwyth to Devil's Bridge. Days include guided visits to Tretower Court and Castle, boat journeys on the Severn and the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, exploration of two significant gardens, and a brewery visit to sample Welsh real ale. Tour manager Chris Walsh accompanies the group throughout, and all excursions, transport, and accommodation are arranged. The pace is relaxed, with most nights spent in Llandovery, making it ideal for travellers who prefer structure and the comfort of returning to a single base.
