7-day independent rail trip from Munich through Salzburg to Vienna

Illustration of Munich, Salzburg, and Vienna

Railbookers runs this 7-day, 6-night independent rail vacation from Munich through Salzburg to Vienna, with two nights booked in each of the three cities. The included list covers standard-class rail travel and hotel breakfast only, so sightseeing in each stop is self-planned rather than guided. Munich's two nights take in the Marienplatz and its Town Hall, with the option of the Deutsches Museum or a beer hall visit. The train on to Salzburg runs through scenic parts of Austria, arriving at a UNESCO-listed Baroque Old Town built around the Festung Hohensalzburg castle and Mozart's birthplace. A further scenic train reaches Vienna for two nights among the city's Imperial architecture, museums, and cafes. Because the trip has no included tours, travelers who prefer to set their own itinerary in each city, rather than follow a guide, are best suited to it. It works as a straightforward rail-and-hotel base for exploring Bavaria and Austria at your own pace.
