Mountains & Coast in Montenegro, a rail journey with Ffestiniog Travel

The Dalmatian Coast is well known for its stunning beauty, but the remote mountains of the north are much less visited though equally beautiful.

Day by day

  1. Day 1overnight: Belgrade

    Flight to Belgrade

    Lunchtime flight from London Heathrow to Belgrade, arriving early evening. Transfer to centrally located hotel.

  2. Day 2railovernight: Bijelo Polje

    Across the Border into Montenegro

    We take the train from Belgrade and very soon find ourselves heading west in glorious mountain scenery. Our destination is Bijelo Polje, a small border town which will be our home for 3 nights.

  3. Day 3overnight: Bijelo Polje

    Meet the Locals

    After a short walking tour of the town, we drive to the Djalovica Gorge and St. Nicholas Monastery. We lunch with a local family and have an evening meal on a farm where the owner is famous for his cheese making.

  4. Day 4overnight: Bijelo Polje

    Springs, Waterfalls & Lakes

    Drive to the Ali Pasha Springs close to the Kosovan border, the Grlja Waterfall and the small town of Plav. Lunch is included at a local restaurant.

  5. Day 5railovernight: Bar

    Local Train to Bar

    The railway line to Bar on the Dalmatian Coast is justifiably famous as one of the most scenic in Europe. For 80 miles between Bijelo Polje and Podgorica, the line climbs high above the valley and there are wonderful views of the surrounding mountains.

  6. Day 6overnight: Podgorica

    The Dalmatian Coast

    Much of the coastline around Budva has now been highly developed but the town still has an historic central area which we visit before moving on to the beautiful Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Podgorica for a 2-night stay.

  7. Day 7overnight: Podgorica

    Beautiful Virpazar

    After a short drive to the Skadar Lake, we transfer to a boat to reach Virpazar, a lovely lakeside village in a region famous for its small family vineyards. We lunch and have wine tasting at a winery before returning by road to Podgorica.

  8. Day 8railovernight: Durmitor National Park (Zabljak)

    Ostrog Monastery

    Local train to Niksic to visit the Ostrog Monastery, perched on an almost vertical rock face. Continue by road into the mountains of the Durmitor National Park for a 3-night stay with evening meals included.

  9. Day 9overnight: Durmitor National Park (Zabljak)

    Tara Canyon & Durmitor National Park

    The Tara Canyon is Europe’s deepest and the Tara Bridge which crosses it must rank as one of Europe’s most stunning. A day of amazing mountain scenery also includes a visit to the Black Lake and lunch with a local family.

  10. Day 10overnight: Durmitor National Park (Zabljak)

    Durmitor

    A full day’s drive on mountain roads circumnavigating Durmitor. Lunch included at a local restaurant.

  11. Day 11overnight: Belgrade

    Flight to Belgrade

    Drive to Podgorica Airport for afternoon flight to Belgrade.

  12. Day 12overnight: Belgrade

    Free Day in Belgrade

    Explore Serbia’s capital city – our hotel is within easy walk of the city centre sights including the fortress and Kalemegdan Park.

  13. Day 13

    Return to London

    Mid-morning flight to London arriving at lunchtime.
