Nine-day Balkan rail journey from London to coastal Kotor via sleeper train.
Ffestiniog Travel · Escorted tour
Escorted 13-day loop through Montenegro and Serbia on the Belgrade-Bar Railway.

Ffestiniog Travel's 13-day Mountains & Coast in Montenegro offers a comprehensive escorted tour through both the remote northern mountains and the well-known Dalmatian coastline, with a touch of Serbia. The journey begins in Belgrade, where you have a free day to explore the capital's fortress and Kalemegdan Park. From there, the trip follows the celebrated Belgrade-Bar Railway through dramatic mountain scenery to the small border town of Bijelo Polje, where you spend three nights visiting local monasteries, a gorge, and a working farm famous for cheese making. You then ride the scenic railway again toward the coast, stopping at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kotor and the lakeside village of Virpazar, known for family vineyards. The tour culminates in Durmitor National Park, where you see Europe's deepest canyon, the Tara Bridge, and the Black Lake. Ffestiniog Travel provides a tour leader from London, a local Montenegrin guide, all ground transport by private coach, most meals, and airport transfers. This suits escorted travellers seeking a balance of rail, culture, local food experiences, and mountain scenery.
Lunchtime flight from London Heathrow to Belgrade, arriving early evening. Transfer to centrally located hotel.
We take the train from Belgrade and very soon find ourselves heading west in glorious mountain scenery. Our destination is Bijelo Polje, a small border town which will be our home for 3 nights.
After a short walking tour of the town, we drive to the Djalovica Gorge and St. Nicholas Monastery. We lunch with a local family and have an evening meal on a farm where the owner is famous for his cheese making.
Drive to the Ali Pasha Springs close to the Kosovan border, the Grlja Waterfall and the small town of Plav. Lunch is included at a local restaurant.
The railway line to Bar on the Dalmatian Coast is justifiably famous as one of the most scenic in Europe. For 80 miles between Bijelo Polje and Podgorica, the line climbs high above the valley and there are wonderful views of the surrounding mountains.
Much of the coastline around Budva has now been highly developed but the town still has an historic central area which we visit before moving on to the beautiful Bay of Kotor, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Podgorica for a 2-night stay.
After a short drive to the Skadar Lake, we transfer to a boat to reach Virpazar, a lovely lakeside village in a region famous for its small family vineyards. We lunch and have wine tasting at a winery before returning by road to Podgorica.
Local train to Niksic to visit the Ostrog Monastery, perched on an almost vertical rock face. Continue by road into the mountains of the Durmitor National Park for a 3-night stay with evening meals included.
The Tara Canyon is Europe’s deepest and the Tara Bridge which crosses it must rank as one of Europe’s most stunning. A day of amazing mountain scenery also includes a visit to the Black Lake and lunch with a local family.
A full day’s drive on mountain roads circumnavigating Durmitor. Lunch included at a local restaurant.
Drive to Podgorica Airport for afternoon flight to Belgrade.
Explore Serbia’s capital city – our hotel is within easy walk of the city centre sights including the fortress and Kalemegdan Park.
Mid-morning flight to London arriving at lunchtime.
