Five-day Scottish Highlands castle and garden tour aboard the Royal Scotsman

Heritage Home & Gardens, a rail journey with Belmond

Belmond operates this five-day, four-night rail journey aboard the Royal Scotsman, running in a loop that begins and ends near Edinburgh. Guests never change hotels: the same cabin serves as home for all four nights, while the train moves overnight between stops in the Highlands. The days are built around private visits to castles and gardens rather than long stretches on board. On day one the train crosses the Forth Railway Bridge before guests disembark at Montrose to walk the grounds of Pitmuies Garden. Day two brings a hosted tour of Foulis Castle, seat of Clan Munro, led by the family itself, and day three adds a drive to the Isle of Skye and an evening visit to Ballindalloch Castle. A coach excursion to the Rothiemurchus Estate on day four is followed by a gala dinner, the last night on board. The trip suits travellers who want a fully guided, single-accommodation way to see Highland history without organizing transport themselves.

What to know before you look closer

  • Day 3 includes a drive to the Isle of Skye and day 4 a coach transfer to the Rothiemurchus Estate, so part of both days is spent off the train rather than on board.
  • This evidence pack does not list a price or current scheduled departure dates for the tour; confirm both directly with Belmond.
