Illustration of Essence of the Douro

Great Rail Journeys operates this six-day escorted journey along Portugal's Douro river valley, a route that blends river cruise luxury with coach excursions into historic cities and wine country. Departing London Gatwick with flights included, guests spend five nights aboard a Croisi Europe ship, MS Gil Eanes or MS Amalia Rodrigues, and three nights in a 4-star hotel. The itinerary begins in Porto with a UNESCO-listed harbour tour and port wine tasting, proceeds upriver past terraced vineyards to the Spanish border, includes a coach excursion to the 18th-century Mateus Palace near Vila Real and to Salamanca's golden university buildings, and concludes with a visit to a local quinta for regional port tastings in the Rio Torto valley. All meals, drinks with dinner, excursions and an experienced Tour Manager are included throughout. This trip suits couples, history enthusiasts and wine lovers who prefer guided travel with comprehensive arrangements.
