Four-day Norway rail trip through Bergen, Flam, and Oslo

Railbookers runs this four-day rail journey from Bergen to Oslo, with a stop in Flam, using standard-class train, bus, and boat travel. The trip opens with a night in Bergen, exploring the colorful buildings of the Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage site. On day two, the journey to Flam combines a train to Voss, a bus past the Stalheimsfossen and Sivlefossen waterfalls down the Stalheimskleiva switchback road, and a ferry across the Nærøyfjord, a UNESCO-listed fjord. Day three is built around the Flåm Railway, which climbs nearly 3,000 feet from Flam to the mountain plateau of Myrdal, a route voted the most scenic rail journey in the world, before continuing on to Oslo for a final night. This short trip suits travelers who want a concentrated taste of Norway's fjord and mountain scenery without committing to a long, multi-week itinerary.
On arrival in Bergen, check-in at your hotel for an overnight stay. Set out to discover the distinctly nautical sights of Norway's second-largest city, including the colorful buildings at the Bryggen Hanseatic Wharf, a UNESCO World Heritage site and now home to many of the city's best shops, restaurants, and bars. Or take the Fløibanen funicular up to the top of Floyen for scenic walks and spectacular views of the city.
After breakfast this morning, begin your journey through the fjords with a quick train trip to the scenic district of Voss, followed by a picturesque bus ride passing the Stalheimsfossen and Sivlefossen waterfalls and down the dramatic winding bends of the Stalheimskleiva. Once you arrive at Gudvangen, on the banks of the Naeroyfjord, board the ferry for a breathtaking cruise across the UNESCO World Heritage-listed fjord, spectacularly beautiful with its high peaks framing the narrow, calm thread of water. On arrival in Flam, check-in at your hotel for an overnight stay and begin exploring this idyllic village at your leisure. Perhaps try some traditional Norwegian fare washed down with a regional beer at one of the local restaurants.
After breakfast this morning, catch the world-famous Flam Railway from Flam and ascend the Aurlandsfjord to the high mountain plateau of Myrdal. This incredible journey, which has been voted the most scenic rail journey in the world, will have you passing rugged mountains, deep valleys, and thundering waterfalls, providing simply awe-inspiring views. The train climbs nearly 3,000 feet in the hour it takes to ascend and stops at the amazing Kjosfoss Waterfall along the way. At Myrdal, you will transfer to the main train line to Oslo, and on arrival check-in at your hotel for an overnight stay. Spend the rest of the day exploring the cosmopolitan Norwegian capital. Head up to the Akershus Festning, a medieval castle that offers breathtaking views over the Oslofjord. Alternatively, visit one of Oslo's wide choice of museums. Take a boat out to the Bygdoy Peninsula for the highest concentration of these or stay in the center of town and see Edvard Munch's the Scream at the National Gallery.
Following breakfast check out of your hotel and continue with your travels. If you would like to extend your journey, perhaps with an additional day in a different city, one of our Rail Specialists would be happy to help you with all the details.
