Illustration of Vietnam & China: Hanoi to Kunming by Rail

Intrepid Travel operates this 11-day escorted journey from Hanoi to Kunming, combining Vietnamese culture and China's dramatic mountain landscapes. The tour begins in Hanoi's busy streets and moves north to Sapa, where a day hike through mist-shrouded rice terraces leads to a home-cooked lunch with a H'mong family. After crossing the border near Lao Cai, you board a high-speed train to Kunming, then a bullet train to Shangri-La, a 7th-century Tibetan settlement at 3,200 metres in the Hengduan Mountains. There you visit Ganden Sumtseling Monastery, one of China's largest Tibetan Buddhist centers, and prepare yak butter tea with a local family. The journey climaxes with a two-day guided hike through Tiger Leaping Gorge, where the Jinsha River thunders between near-vertical canyon walls. The tour closes in Lijiang and Baisha, historic stops on the Tea Horse Road, where you learn to write ancient Dongba characters. Travel is by private vehicle, high-speed train, and bullet train. Accommodation ranges from hotels to a guesthouse at Tiger Leaping Gorge.
