Nine-day rail loop from Milan through Venice, Florence and Rome

Railbookers runs this nine-day, eight-night independent rail vacation through four Italian cities, starting and ending in Milan. On day one in Milan, a Hop-on, Hop-off pass covers a first look at the Duomo and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. From there, Trenitalia trains carry you to Venice, Florence, and Rome for two nights each, with a rail return to Milan before the trip ends. Venice, Florence, and Rome each pair a check-in afternoon with a small-group walking tour the next morning: the Doge's Palace and Golden Basilica in Venice, the Accademia Gallery and Michelangelo's David in Florence, and the Colosseum and Roman Forum in Rome. Outside those guided mornings, you set your own schedule for meals and sightseeing. Because the itinerary mixes a few structured half-days with open time, and you carry your own luggage between hotels and stations on each transfer, it suits independent-minded travellers who want some guidance on the major sights without being tied to a group for the whole day.
Welcome to Milan! Check into your centrally located hotel and get ready for an afternoon of exploring using the Hop-on, Hop-off sightseeing pass. Stroll to the Milan Cathedral (Duomo di Milano) and the nearby Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
Following breakfast, make your way to the station for a direct train to Venice Santa Lucia station. On arrival, check-in at your hotel for a two-night stay.
This morning, make your way to St Mark's Square for the start of your small group tour to the Doge's Palace and the Golden Basilica, followed by a guided walking tour through the quieter lanes and alleys.
Following breakfast, embark on your next train to Florence. Make your way to your hotel and check-in for a two-night stay.
After breakfast, make your way to your walking tour and visit the world-famous Accademia gallery, home to Michelangelo's David.
Following breakfast, embark on your final train adventure to Rome. Make your way to your hotel and check-in for a two-night stay.
After breakfast, make your way over to the Colosseum for a guided tour of the famous amphitheater, then walk around the Roman Forum.
Enjoy a final breakfast in the ancient capital this morning before embarking on a train north, back to Milan for an overnight stop.
Check out of your hotel after breakfast this morning and continue with your travels.
