  1. Day 1overnight: London

    London

    London may be huge, but Central London can be walked all over, from the quirky pop-up stalls of the south bank to the glitz of the West End and out to Hyde Park. Highlights: see some world-famous landmarks, watch a show at one of many West End Theatres, experience the quirky nightlife of Soho.

  2. Day 2overnight: Brussels

    Brussels (2 nights)

    Belgium's biggest city accommodates an eclectic mix of old and new, from Europe's most beautiful square, lined with guild houses and continental cafes, to its bureaucratic alter-ego as capital of the EU. Come for the beer, waffles, and moules frites. Highlights: Delirium Cafe (over 2000 beers), the Grand Place, and the Manneken Pis fountain.

  3. Day 4overnight: Amsterdam

    Amsterdam (3 nights)

    There is a lot more to the city than the stereotypical picture, with its abundance of engaging museums, beautiful townhouses, and canals. Highlights: the Van Gogh Museum, cycling Europe's biggest historic centre, and a tour of the Red Light District.

    Berlin (4 nights)

    Berlin is the alternative, cool kid of Europe: liberal attitudes, graffiti, skaters, art, clubs and food, plus fascinating WWII history around every corner. Highlights: a section of the old Berlin Wall, the Reichstag dome, and nightlife in Schoneberg and Kreuzberg.

  5. Day 11overnight: Krakow

    Krakow (3 nights)

    Krakow escaped destruction in WWII, preserving its postcard-perfect Old Town and famous bar cellars, near the Auschwitz concentration camp which demands a humble visit. Highlights: Europe's largest medieval market square, Poland's best-preserved city, and Gothic cellar bars open until late.

  6. Day 14overnight: Prague

    Prague (3 nights)

    Prague is stunning; on any side street or square you'll find unique, colourful buildings. The Czech Republic is home of Pilsner beer. Highlights: crossing the Charles Bridge, the curvy Dancing Building, and sampling Czech Pilsner in the Old Town.

  7. Day 17overnight: Munich

    Munich (2 nights)

    The capital of Bavaria and Germany's third largest city draws you in with elegance and a pedestrianised city centre, plus the beer of Oktoberfest. Highlights: the Stadtmuseum, the Englischer Garten, and the Bavarian beer festival.

  8. Day 19overnight: Vienna

    Vienna (3 nights)

    Vienna is crisp, clean and chic with a multitude of classical palaces and grand imperial buildings. Highlights: the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, apple strudel and wiener schnitzel, and a classical concert.

  9. Day 22overnight: Bratislava

    Bratislava (2 nights)

    Bratislavans are incredibly friendly and, as the city is not yet mainstream, food, beer and wine are still cheap. Highlights: climbing to the 19th-century castle, a night tour, and folk-art shopping at Úľuv.

  10. Day 24overnight: Budapest

    Budapest (4 nights)

    Proudly guarding the Danube, the once twin cities of Buda and Pest show off architectural styles from Baroque to Art Nouveau. Highlights: 15th-century thermal spas, panoramic photos from Buda castle, and the Sziget rock and indie festival in August.

  11. Day 28overnight: Belgrade

    Belgrade (3 nights)

    The capital of Serbia has an all-night party scene and friendly atmosphere, home to the world's largest Orthodox church. Highlights: the 18th-century Belgrade Fortress, the cobbled streets of Skadarlija, and Danube splavovi party boats.

  12. Day 31overnight: Zagreb

    Zagreb (2 nights)

    A city of flowers and fountains with a curious Mediterranean feel and a museum-café-theatre culture. Highlights: the view from Lotrščak Tower, Mirogoj cemetery, and Kino Europa, Zagreb's oldest cinema.

  13. Day 33overnight: Ljubljana

    Ljubljana (2 nights)

    A colourful chocolate-box city with a café culture and festival atmosphere all summer long. Highlights: the 16th-century castle on the hill, the colourful streets, and 360-views from an art-deco skyscraper terrace.

  14. Day 35overnight: Venice

    Venice (3 nights)

    Venice is unique, built on mudbanks in the lagoon, forgoing cars for canals. Highlights: St Mark's Square, getting lost in the alleyways and canals, and riding a vaporetto down the grand canal.

  15. Day 38overnight: Rome

    Rome (4 nights)

    Rome delights with its eateries and mesmerises with its monuments; also visit Vatican City, the world's smallest country. Highlights: the ruins of the Roman Forum, the Colosseum, and real Italian coffee, ice-cream and pizza.

  16. Day 42overnight: Florence

    Florence (2 nights)

    The capital of Tuscany, birthplace of Renaissance art and architecture. Highlights: Michelangelo's statue of David, countless Renaissance chapels and churches, and exquisite ice-cream.

  17. Day 44overnight: Milan

    Milan (2 nights)

    Milan is cosmopolitan and fast-paced, a beacon of Western fashion, home to La Scala Opera House and Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper. Highlights: the vast 14th-century cathedral, fashion-capital shopping, and a La Scala performance.

  18. Day 46overnight: Nice

    Nice (3 nights)

    Looking onto the French Riviera, Nice is a chic city with some of the best food in the country and the Promenade des Anglais. Highlights: exploring the old-world town, sunset from the Promenade des Anglais, and a sightseeing cruise of the Cote d'Azur.

  19. Day 49overnight: Barcelona

    Barcelona (4 nights)

    Barcelona offers everything in abundance: food, nightlife, views, and architectural and artistic marvels including the Sagrada Familia. Highlights: the Picasso Museum, Gaudi's Parc Guell, and the bars around Las Ramblas.

  20. Day 53overnight: Paris

    Paris (4 nights)

    Paris is a byword for romance and the epitome of elegance, from the Eiffel Tower to the Pont Neuf. Highlights: the Mona Lisa at the Louvre Museum, a cabaret act at the Moulin Rouge, and the colourful nightlife of the Marais.

  21. Day 57

    London

    Finish your trip back in the UK's capital city. Either finish your journey here, or continue your onward journey home the same day to your nearest UK station for free using your Interrail pass.
