  3. Day 4overnight: Lugano

    Travel to subtropical Lake Lugano, then Lake Maggiore, Italy's second-largest lake; optional boat trip to the garden island of Isola Bella.

  4. Day 5railovernight: Zermatt

    Zermatt

    Cross the Simplon Pass to a resort surrounded by Switzerland's highest mountains, including the Matterhorn; the car-free town of Zermatt is reached via an alpine train from Tasch.

    Visit a cheese factory in Gruyeres, then Berne, Switzerland's capital, with its medieval architecture and the Zytglogge clock (built 1530). Continue along Lake Thun via Interlaken and the Brunig Pass to Lucerne, with its Chapel bridge and Lion monument.
