London to Amsterdam via Croatian islands: rail cities and seven-day sailing week

Euroventure's Rail and Sail Croatia is a 22-day journey that splits into two chapters: 15 days of independent rail travel through London, Paris, Munich, Zagreb, Split, Ljubljana, Vienna, Berlin and Amsterdam, followed by seven nights of skippered sailing through the Croatian islands. You travel north to south across Europe by train, stopping to explore each city at your own pace with printed guides and walking directions, then board a yacht at Dubrovnik for the week's highlight, navigating among Šipan, Mljet, Korčula, Lovište and Hvar. The trip includes a night train from Munich to Zagreb, all rail tickets and accommodation in hotels or hostels, plus meals aboard the yacht. During the sailing week, a professional skipper and Guest Experience Leader guide the group through activities such as paddleboarding, dinghy exploration, snorkelling and wine tasting at an organic farm. It suits first-time rail travellers who want structure and support, repeat rail enthusiasts seeking a multi-country route, couples mixing city discovery with coastal romance, and independent explorers comfortable with self-guided days offset by group activities.
Start your trip in London with the Eurostar from St Pancras, then a train to Paris (4 hours). Paris is a byword for romance and elegance, from the Eiffel Tower to the Pont Neuf.
See the Mona Lisa at the Louvre, watch a cabaret act at the famous Moulin Rouge, and bask in the atmosphere of pretty Paris, or head to the Pompidou Centre for a modern art fix.
Trains to Munich (6 hours). The Bavarian capital draws you in with beer gardens, green parks and grand Gothic buildings, plus Oktoberfest.
Night train to Zagreb (10 hours), heading for Croatia's vibrant capital.
Catch a 360-view from the Lotrščak Tower and stroll through the beautiful Mirogoj cemetery in this city of flowers and fountains.
Have a coffee in Kino Europa, Zagreb's oldest cinema, before continuing south to the coast.
Train to Split (6.5 hours). Relax on the beach or check out Diocletian's Palace for a hit of culture, before continuing to the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dubrovnik.
Bus to Dubrovnik (5 hours). Spend the morning walking the walls of the old town before checking in at the marina. Sail by the Dubrovnik walls, then set sail for Šipan, the largest of the Elaphiti islands, with sunset drinks and dinner at a local Konoba.
Sail to the green island of Mljet, the most unspoilt of Croatia's islands. Explore the National Park by bike and the translucent salt lakes by kayak, home to the Mediterranean's largest coral reef, plus the Benedictine Monastery.
Arrive at the old fishing town of Lumbarda on the island of Korčula. Meander the maze-like backstreets of Korčula old town, birthplace of Marco Polo, then climb to Massimo's rooftop bar for sunset cocktails.
A hidden treasure on the Peljesac Peninsula, with crystal-clear water for swimming and unwinding onboard, followed by a Croatian meal and a superb sunset.
Arrive at this peaceful 15th-century fishing town, with ancient ruins, medieval churches, and Petar Hektorović's Tvrdalj castle. Start the evening at Hvar Fortress then head into town.
Sail to one of the oldest towns in Europe, Stari Grad. Visit Hora Farm, an organic farm and winery where everything is grown and produced on site, sampling local wines in this UNESCO-listed countryside.
Sail back to the marina in Trogir. Explore the historic architecture of nearby Trogir old town, or transfer into Split Old Town to stroll the streets and Diocletian's Palace.
Bus to Ljubljana (10 hours), a colourful chocolate-box city with a café culture and festival atmosphere all summer long.
See the 16th-century castle on the hill, wander through the colourful streets, take in 360-views from an art-deco skyscraper terrace, or take a day trip to picturesque Lake Bled, 45 minutes away.
Train to Vienna (6.5 hours). Vienna is crisp, clean and chic, with a multitude of classical palaces and grand imperial buildings.
Visit the Spanish Riding School of Vienna, eat real apple strudel and wiener schnitzel, and go to a classical concert in a city renowned for music.
Trains to Berlin (9 hours). Start your visit by passing Checkpoint Charlie, an old military checkpoint that once separated East and West Berlin.
See a section of the old Berlin Wall, climb the dome of the renovated Reichstag, and discover the nightlife of Schöneberg and Kreuzberg.
Train to Amsterdam (7 hours). Visit the Van Gogh Museum, discover Europe's biggest historic centre by pedal, and take a tour of the Red Light District.
