Great Rail Journeys operates this eight-day river cruise aboard MS Estrela, a luxury ship custom-built in 2024 to navigate the Douro River through Portugal and Spain. The journey begins with a direct flight from London Gatwick to Porto, where you board the 60-cabin vessel and enjoy a sunset introduction to the city. Over the following week, you cruise eastward through the port wine region, passing the Barragem do Carrapatelo (the deepest lock in Europe) and stopping at picturesque towns. Excursions include visits to Lamego Cathedral, founded in 1129; the medieval walled town of Castelo Rodrigo on the Spanish border; UNESCO-listed Salamanca with its 18th-century Plaza Mayor and a flamenco performance at lunch; the 18th-century Mateus Palace near Vila Real; and Quinta de São Luiz, a prestigious port wine estate founded in 1638. On Day 7, you return to Porto and choose between a guided city tour with port cellar tasting or a day trip to Guimarães, the birthplace of Portugal. Throughout, all meals, drinks with dinner, and tips are included, alongside optional onboard language and history lessons. The journey is escorted by an experienced Tour Manager and Cruise Director team and suits luxury-seeking couples, food-and-wine travellers, and history enthusiasts who prefer guided comfort.
