North Lakes in a Nutshell

Four-day Lake District rail tour from Penrith with distillery and mansion visits

Illustration of North Lakes in a Nutshell

PTG Tours operates this four-day escorted rail break into England's Lake District, combining scenic travel, history, and regional food and drink. You depart from your home UK railway station on mainline rail bound for Penrith, then base yourself for three nights at the North Lakes Hotel & Spa. The itinerary is anchored by four distinct experiences: a ride on the narrow-gauge Threlkeld Quarry railway into an old mining museum, a distillery tour and tasting at Lakes Distillery, a guided visit to Dalemain Mansion and its award-winning marmalade, and a heritage steamer cruise across Ullswater Lake with views of the surrounding mountains. Day 2 includes free time in the market town of Keswick to explore the lakeshore and local shops. An experienced Tour Manager leads the group throughout. Bed and breakfast and evening meals are included, and you travel by mainline rail from your home station with the option of Standard or First Class, depending on your departure region. This tour appeals to guided-comfort travellers who enjoy history and local food experiences without the pace of a multi-destination itinerary.
