Day by day

  1. Day 1overnight: Crete

    Crete (4 nights)

    Explore the Psychro Cave, hike the White Mountains, and visit Elafonisi beach for pink sands.

  2. Day 5overnight: Athens

    Crete to Athens (4 nights)

    Night ferry to Athens (about 10 hours). Photograph the Acropolis from Fillopapou hill and explore the Parthenon and Temple of Poseidon.

  3. Day 9overnight: Bari

    Athens to Bari (1 night)

    Overnight travel to Bari (about 21 hours: bus to Patras, night ferry to Bari). Wander Bari Vecchia's old town and try fresh orecchiette pasta.

  4. Day 10railovernight: Naples

    Bari to Naples (2 nights)

    Train to Naples (about 4 hours). Try an authentic Neapolitan pizza margherita and take a day trip to Pompeii or Mount Vesuvius.

  5. Day 12railovernight: Rome

    Naples to Rome (4 nights)

    Train to Rome (about 2 hours). Marvel at the Roman Forum, see the Colosseum, and try real Italian coffee, gelato and pizza.

  6. Day 16railovernight: La Spezia

    Rome to La Spezia (2 nights)

    Train to La Spezia (about 4.5 hours). Use it as a base for a Cinque Terre day trip.

  7. Day 18overnight: Nice

    La Spezia to Nice (3 nights)

    Trains to Nice (about 5.5 hours). Watch the sunset from the Promenade des Anglais and take a day trip to Monaco or Cannes.

  8. Day 21railovernight: Montpellier

    Nice to Montpellier (2 nights)

    Train to Montpellier. Stroll Place de la Comédie and the Écusson district, and sample regional wines in the Antigone quarter.

  9. Day 23railovernight: Barcelona

    Montpellier to Barcelona (4 nights)

    Train to Barcelona (about 3.5 hours). See the Picasso Museum in the Gothic Quarter and spot Gaudi's Parc Güell.

  10. Day 27railovernight: Valencia

    Barcelona to Valencia (2 nights)

    Train to Valencia (about 4 hours). Taste real paella by the beach and explore the old quarter of El Carmen.

  11. Day 29railovernight: Madrid

    Valencia to Madrid (2 nights)

    Train to Madrid (about 2.5 hours). Visit the Museo del Prado, the Rastro Flea Market, and the Bernabeu stadium.

  12. Day 31railovernight: Seville

    Madrid to Seville (3 nights)

    Train to Seville (about 2 hours). Visit the Alcazar Palace and experience an authentic flamenco show.

  13. Day 34railovernight: Faro

    Seville to Faro (2 nights)

    Bus to Faro (about 4 hours). Relax on the beach, ride the Comboio Turística tourist train, and go dolphin watching.

  14. Day 36railovernight: Lisbon

    Faro to Lisbon (3 nights)

    Train to Lisbon (about 4 hours). Climb steep cobbled streets to the castle and dance to live music at the Music Box club.

  15. Day 39railovernight: Porto

    Lisbon to Porto (3 nights)

    Train to Porto (about 3 hours). Take a Douro River cruise, explore Ribeira, Baixa and Bolhão, and watch the sunset from the Dom Luis I Bridge.

  16. Day 42

    Depart from Porto

    Trip concludes in Porto; fly home from Porto Airport (having flown in to Chania International Airport).
