Lakes, Mountains & The Rockies

Nine-day Canadian Rockies rail loop from Vancouver to Calgary via VIA Rail

Illustration of Lakes, Mountains & The Rockies

Vacations By Rail's Lakes, Mountains & The Rockies is a 9-day independent rail journey from Vancouver to Calgary that combines city exploration with mountain immersion. The itinerary begins with two days in Vancouver, where guided tours visit Stanley Park, Gastown, and the Capilano Suspension Bridge, or optional alternatives include a seaplane trip to Victoria or a cycling tour. Day 3 brings an overnight aboard VIA Rail's Canadian, a storied sleeper train that departs Vancouver and traverses the Coast Mountains through domed-glass observation lounges, arriving in Jasper the following morning. The next two days are spent exploring Jasper National Park on a guided tour of the Athabasca River, Maligne Canyon, and Maligne Lake (seasonal), followed by a full-day motorcoach journey along the Icefields Parkway to the Athabasca Glacier, where you experience the Glacier Skywalk and an Ice Explorer ride. Three nights in Banff National Park include a guided gondola and lake cruise tour and a free day with optional hikes or helicopter excursions. The trip ends in Calgary on Day 9. This suits independent travellers who appreciate structure and included guidance alongside self-directed exploration.
