Six-day escorted Isle of Wight holiday from Portsmouth with steam railway

Illustration of Isle of Wight

Great Rail Journeys operates a six-day escorted holiday centred on the Isle of Wight, departing from Portsmouth. The journey begins with a catamaran crossing over the Solent to Ryde, followed by local rail travel down the east coast to Sandown, where you stay for five nights at the three-star Trouville Hotel on the seafront. Days are structured around guided excursions to Queen Victoria's Osborne House, the medieval Carisbrooke Castle, the Needles chalk stacks and lighthouse, and the harbour town of Yarmouth. A highlight is Day 5, when you board the restored Isle of Wight Steam Railway, a heritage line dating from 1862 that winds through unspoilt countryside and woodland. Day 4 is unguided, letting you explore Sandown's seafront, visit nearby Shanklin, or walk scenic trails at your own pace. All meals, transport by rail, coach, and ferry, and excursions are included. This tour suits history enthusiasts, couples seeking a leisurely base-hotel stay, and travellers who appreciate the comfort of a guided group with a Tour Manager present throughout.

What to know before you look closer

  • Group size reaches 40; confirm capacity and Tour Manager attention level with the operator if you prefer smaller escorted groups
  • Day 4 is unguided and at leisure; the tour is not structured activities every day
  • Five consecutive nights in the same hotel (Sandown) means limited geographic variety beyond day excursions
