Railtrail Tours' Historical Wonders of Wessex & Portsmouth is a 5-day, 4-night escorted tour based at the Winchester Royal Hotel for all four nights. Day 2 takes the train to Portsmouth Harbour to explore the Historic Dockyard, stepping aboard HMS Warrior, HMS Victory, and Henry VIII's warship Mary Rose. Day 3 visits the Jane Austen House & Museum in Hampshire before an afternoon on the heritage Watercress Line between Alton and Alresford. Day 4 stays in Winchester itself, touring Winchester Castle's Great Hall, home to the Round Table linked to the legends of King Arthur, Queen Eleanor's Garden, and Winchester Cathedral. A Tour Manager accompanies the group throughout, with bed, breakfast, dinner, and all admissions included. This trip suits history lovers who want maritime and medieval history covered from one hotel base, with two named rail journeys among an otherwise coach-based itinerary.
