Grand Rail Experience with Glacier National Park

Independent Amtrak roundtrip with a 3-night Glacier National Park stop

Grand Rail Experience with Glacier National Park, a rail journey with Amtrak Vacations

Amtrak Vacations runs this independent, 17-day rail vacation that starts and ends in Chicago, with a 3-night stopover in Glacier National Park before continuing to Seattle, Los Angeles, New Orleans and Washington, D.C. There is no tour manager: travellers repeatedly travel on their own to the Amtrak station between legs. On day 2, the Empire Builder arrives at Glacier National Park, home to two mountain ranges and 130 lakes, with a short walk to the historic Glacier Park Lodge. On day 3, the Big Sky Circle Tour drives over Maria's Pass and along the 50-mile Going-to-the-Sun Road, with wildlife at Goat Lick. Seven of the sixteen nights are spent onboard Amtrak across five long-distance trains, including the Coast Starlight down the Pacific Coast and the Sunset Limited through the southern deserts to New Orleans. It suits independent, experienced rail travellers who want the full cross-country Amtrak route with extra time in a major national park along the way.

What to know before you look closer

  • This is an independent rail vacation, not an escorted tour: travellers repeatedly "travel on their own" to the Amtrak station between legs, and there is no tour manager.
  • The Big Sky Circle Tour of Glacier National Park is seasonal and "does not run until late-June," per the operator's own highlights.
  • The evidence lists 31 accommodation options across the cities and tiers on this trip, from the Holiday Inn to the Waldorf Astoria in Chicago, so the exact hotel depends on what is booked.
  • All the Amtrak travel, including the seven overnight legs across five different trains, is in Coach class rather than a sleeper cabin.
