Great Rail Journeys · Escorted River Cruise

Fairytale Bavaria & The Beautiful Blue Danube

Bavaria mountains and castles, then Danube River cruise through Austria

Illustration of Fairytale Bavaria & The Beautiful Blue Danube

Great Rail Journeys operates this escorted rail and river tour connecting Bavaria with the Danube. The journey begins in Bavaria, where travellers explore the region's mountains and castles by train, then transfer to a river cruise ship to sail down the Danube through Austria. The two-part structure gives you focused time in Bavaria before settling aboard for a slower, water-based perspective of the Austrian riverside. This format suits travellers who want guided planning and social travel without driving themselves. The combination of rail and river means you unpack once on the ship and wake to new scenery each morning, typical of European river cruises.
