Independent rail tour across England from London to York, 15 days.

Illustration of Explore England by Rail

Adeo Travel's Explore England by Rail is a 15-day independent rail tour that lets you use your own BritRail Pass to visit England's most visited heritage cities and regions. Beginning in London, the itinerary moves through Cornwall's coastal lines, Bath's Roman heritage, Oxford's university spires, Chester's medieval walls, the Lake District's mountain scenery, and York's Gothic cathedral before returning to London. Most days you travel by train at your own pace, choosing which museums, galleries, and streets to explore; three included small-group day tours visit Stonehenge and the Cotswold villages, the Lake District with a boat trip, and Harrogate or the Yorkshire Moors. You stay in solid three- and four-star hotels with full breakfast included. This trip suits independent travellers who want structure without a guide shadowing them, as well as first-time rail tourists learning how to navigate a national rail network.

What to know before you look closer

  • The from-price of GBP 2,545 is representative pricing for shoulder-season travel (April or October) with two people sharing a room in the sample hotels listed; final cost depends on your chosen accommodation tier and travel dates.
  • All hotels are listed as "or similar," meaning your final accommodation may differ from the named properties.
  • London Underground and Glasgow Subway are not covered by the BritRail Pass; taxis or transfers from train stations to hotels are not included.
  • Three small-group day tours are included (Stonehenge/Cotswolds from Bath, Cotswolds from Moreton-in-Marsh, Lake District from Windermere); many other days are unguided exploration, so you navigate attractions and dining independently.
