Cologne to Budapest by rail through seven Central European cities

Railbookers' Central Europe tour is a 12-day independent rail journey that starts in Cologne and ends in Budapest, traveling first class through Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Vienna, and Bratislava. Day 1 begins with free time in Cologne to see the city's medieval Dome cathedral before catching a train to Berlin for a two-night stay with hop-on hop-off bus tickets and a guided half-day walking tour. From Dresden, a direct train continues to Prague, where a Vltava River cruise and an 11am secret food tour of local Czech dishes fill two nights. Trains then continue by rail to Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest, with most days left free for self-guided exploration, from Vienna's Zentralfriedhof cemetery to Budapest's Szechenyi Spa. With rail travel and breakfast included at each stop but few guided activities beyond Berlin and Prague, this suits independent-minded travelers and first-time rail visitors who want the planning done for them without a full escort.
First stop, Cologne! Upon arrival you have free time to explore, a must see is the Dome, a spectacular medieval cathedral built over six centuries, then perhaps a visit to the Lindt Chocolate Museum.
