Anchorage & Talkeetna Northern Lights Getaway

Four-day Alaska winter rail trip from Anchorage to Talkeetna chasing Northern Lights

Illustration of Anchorage & Talkeetna Northern Lights Getaway

Vacations By Rail's four-day Anchorage and Talkeetna Northern Lights Getaway runs in January, February, and March, combining independent exploration with guided adventures in Alaska's winter landscape. The trip begins in Anchorage, Alaska's largest city, where you arrive independently and have a full free day to explore galleries, museums, and the Alaska Native Heritage Center. On the evening of Day 1, a coach carries you into the wilderness surrounding Anchorage to search for the Northern Lights with a professional photographer guide who teaches techniques to capture the aurora. Day 3 brings the centerpiece rail journey: the Alaska Railroad's Aurora Winter Train departs Anchorage station, crosses the Knik River with the Chugach Mountains in the backdrop, and after approximately three hours arrives in the remote town of Talkeetna as Denali comes into view. Day 4 concludes with an included dog sledding excursion at five-time Iditarod Champion Dallas Seavey's homestead, where you mush your own sled team along a six-mile wilderness path, followed by lunch and a coach return to Anchorage. This trip suits first-time rail travellers, independent explorers, photographers, and couples seeking a winter adventure that balances free time with structured experiences.

What to know before you look closer

  • Northern Lights visibility is weather-dependent; one reviewer saw no lights due to clouds but still found the overall experience worthwhile.
  • The return transfer from Talkeetna to Anchorage on Day 4 is by coach, not rail.
  • Flights and airport transfers are not included; book those separately.
  • Two optional flightseeing tours are available at a supplement: one over Anchorage's glaciers and mountains, and one to view Denali from Talkeetna.

A full free day to enjoy Anchorage as you please, from art galleries and the Alaska Native Heritage Center to the Anchorage Museum. An optional flightseeing tour over the glaciers, valleys and mountains of the Anchorage region is available at a supplement.

  3. Day 3railovernight: Talkeetna

To Talkeetna on the Alaska Railroad

Depart Anchorage's railway station this morning on the Alaska Railroad's Aurora Winter Train, crossing the Knik River with the Chugach Mountains in the backdrop. After approximately three hours, Denali comes into view and the train pulls into Talkeetna. An optional flightseeing tour can be taken to see Denali. Because Talkeetna is so remote, it is an exceptional place to experience the Northern Lights.

  4. Day 4rail

Dog sledding in the wilderness and tour conclusion

An excursion to the homestead of five-time Iditarod Champ Dallas Seavey to learn about dog sledding, meet sled dogs and puppies, and mush along a six-mile path through the wilderness with a guide, two people to a sled.
