Journey Mexico's nine-day private tailor-made tour combines a first-class train journey on El Chepe Express with guided exploration of Mexico's Copper Canyon and its colonial villages. Beginning in Los Mochis, the trip takes you to El Fuerte, a charming colonial gateway town where you spend your first evening wandering cobblestone streets. Day 2 is the rail centerpiece: a six-hour ascent through the Sierra Madre in first-class comfort aboard El Chepe, with lounge and dining-dome spaces as the train threads tunnels and bridges. You emerge at Divisadero, perched on the canyon rim, for cliff-edge lodge stays with sunrise and sunset views. A private guide joins you for three days of canyon exploration, including your choice of cable cars, zip lines, or rim hikes in Copper Canyon Adventure Park, visits to Tarahumara cave homes, and a three-day descent into the remote town of Batopilas to explore the 1760s Lost Cathedral of Satevó. The return journey crosses Mennonite country before concluding in historic Chihuahua. Throughout, you stay in boutique colonial lodges with private vehicle transfers and unguided evenings to explore towns at your own pace.

What to know before you look closer

  • Day 5 and 7 involve steep, dramatic mountain switchback roads; confirm your comfort with winding canyon drives before booking.
  • The private guide accompanies only three days (Divisadero, Creel, Batopilas); other days are unguided in towns, meaning you explore at your own pace.
  • No current departure dates are listed in the operator's calendar; this is a private tailor-made tour, so availability and pricing are custom.
